What happens when this is over?

Humans adapt really fast….. the last few weeks have shown us this.
Last week I worried about my overflowing stress cup and keeping things in perspective. This week I dance to the rhythm of working from home, merrily embrace social distancing and self-isolation. It’s quickly become familiar, almost routine.
I like the new camaraderie. I certainly like my short commute, but I do miss the break between meetings when grabbing a coffee, “taking 5” or have a quick social chat created headspace. But the truth is that this “new” way already feels like the norm – mostly definitely business as usual. So, if it feels like this after a week, what will it feel like when this is over? Will we want to go back to how it used to be?
March is no longer a month – it’s an era!
We have talked about working from home for years without wholesale adoption. “it doesn’t work for us” “we don’t have the right culture” “we need to be in a team” “the tech doesn’t really work” and so on. The truth is the last few weeks have simply wiped away such reasons. Companies making organisational changes in days that they may have been pondering for years.
Obviously lots of sectors can’t work from home but those companies that could but have resisted now find themselves with a massive change to their business that they simply didn’t plan for and haven’t been able to implement in their own time on their own terms.
So, the question is what happens when this is over?
Will teams be happy to go back to how it was? Will people be happy to turn the clock back even if we actually could?
Maybe not…..
The point about change like this means we have no choice but to adapt. When it comes like this we have to assimilate quickly. So when it comes like this will it become the norm?
One thing that will have to change is leadership. Thinking about we incorporate this change so it works; for business, staff and the economy will dominate the discussions in many senior management and board meetings.
At Curium Solutions, we live and breathe transformational organisational impact and we know making change stick is a challenge many organisations struggle with. We work with leadership teams to develop the right skills, approach and thinking to make sure culture change is intrinsically connected to the transformational journey.
As we slowly adjust to the new norm, this is exactly what leadership teams across the country will need to prioritise if they are to take advantage of the change and make it work.
